High-street baker Greggs has commissioned project management firm Clegg Food Projects to build a new distribution centre.

The new Enfield centre will improve efficiency and increase capacity for delivery to Greggs stores in the south, according to Clegg.

The build will be Greggs’s 19th project working with Clegg over its 15-year partnership with the company.

Business development director at Clegg Food Projects John Moxon said: “The new distribution centre at Enfield is a significant project for us and we are working closely with Greggs to alter and refurbish the site to meet their specific needs.”

Refrigeration equipment

Clegg’s last project with Greggs – managing the design and installation of more efficient refrigeration equipment at its Centre of Excellence for savouries in Newcastle upon Tyne – is due for completion later this summer.

Established in the 1930s as part of Nottingham-based Clegg Group, Clegg Food Projects works with food manufacturers to design, plan and construct factories.

The project management firm provides new methodologies and manufacturing processes and complete turnkey solutions, ranging from large-scale factories, extensions to existing facilities and refurbishment projects.

Clegg has worked with some of the major players in the food and drink sector, including 2 Sisters Food Group, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Premier Foods and Bakkavor.

The new distribution centre followed the development of several new factories and development centres in the past year.

Potato supplier Branston announced it would be spending £5M to expand its site in Lincolnshire and will create 20 new jobs.

It will allow potatoes that are not suitable for the fresh market to be peeled and sent to convenience food producers for inclusion in their mash potato ranges or for pie and casserole toppings.

More skilled workers will be created at Sausage manufacturer Finnebrogue Artisan’s new £25M processing facility that opened this month (June 3).

A new development centre and Renshaw Academy in Wavertree, Liverpool will serve as cake decoration manufacturer Real Good Food’s international hub for food manufacturing innovation and cake decoration skills training.
