Thousands of chickens die in a shed fire in Carlisle

A blaze that killed about 16,000 chickens in Carlisle has sparked a wave of response on social media site Twitter.

Users shared dramatic images of the fire, while others voiced their concerns over the treatment of the chickens. We capture some of the best tweets below.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the fire on Orton Road, Carlisle, just before 12:00am on Sunday (March 10).

Six fire crews from Wigton, Aspartia, Longtown, Gretna and Penrith attended the blaze. Local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut to protect them from the smoke billowing from the fire.

Flames could be seen reaching 9m above the shed after the roof of the shed had collapsed, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service group manager Craig Drinkald told local publication News & Star.

Saved from the blaze

Firefighters said that a second shed – also containing about 16,000 birds – was saved from the blaze. It was thought unlikely that the birds in the burning shed could have been rescued.

Crews had the fire under control by 4:00pm and no one was injured. An investigation is now underway to establish the cause of the conflagration.

Drinkald added: “The cause of the fire is now under investigation but there is nothing to suggest it was untoward.”

Meanwhile, an explosion at a food packaging factory in Scotland is currently under investigation by police.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland were alerted to the explosion and the fire which broke out at Rockwell Solutions in Dundee last week (March 13).
