Sushi manufacturer Ichiban UK has invested in a labelling and coding automation system to ensure compliance with retailers’ codes of practice.

The system, from automation and food processing technology provider OAL, has prevented label and packaging errors, which can result in big fines. It has also helped to identify areas in the company’s production operations that would benefit from improvement.

The Autocoding system ensures the correct packaging and labelling are applied to Ichiban’s products by using a single automated system to control its packaging lines and integrate existing packaging devices on the line.

“[The system is] easy to use and has helped us focus by accurately recording line stoppages and identifying areas for improvement,” said Ichiban UK’s technical manager Julie Rice.

Mismatch error

It works by scanning a 2D barcode printed on every product to check and verify the date code, and whether packaging is correct. If a mismatch error occurs, the line stops, and the problem is investigated.

Payback has been shortened through the use of OAL’s Factory Performance software module, which provides the team with production information on improvement areas.

When a line stop occurs, operators must record a reason code on the touchscreen terminal. The recorded data is both accurate and can be used in real-time so actions can be taken if any issues occur.

The automatic system replaces existing manual production logs, providing more accurate and reliable data, and helping Ichiban UK identify areas for improvement.
