IFR becomes Quadram Institute in search for healthier food

Quadram researchers will study links between gut microbes and health

The Norwich-based Institute of Food Research (IFR) will transform into the Quadram Institute (QI), a pioneering new facility for food and health research, with effect from April 28 2017.

The QI will expand IFR’s research through its new science strategy. It will integrate research teams from IFR with others from the University of East Anglia, as well as the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals’ Regional Endoscopy Centre.

Construction of a new building to house the QI is said to be progressing well, ahead of its opening in 2018.

Microbial pathogens

QI will investigate how the quality of food can be enhanced to promote lifelong health. It will also seek to reduce microbial pathogens in the food chain and reduce antimicrobial resistance.

By studying the links between gut microbes and health, QI will define what constitutes a healthy gut, and how our health is modulated by our resident gut microbes.

It will translate its research on food, gut microbes and human biology to enhance the health of the population, reducing the burden on healthcare, both in the UK and internationally.

A number of appointments have been made to drive forward the new science strategy of the QI.
