The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is probing the food safety implications of Mars Chocolate's confirmation yesterday (February 23) that batches of Mars and Snickers bars recalled in Germany, on fears of contamination with pieces of plastic, were also distributed in the UK.

An FSA spokesman told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “Mars has just confirmed to the FSA that there has been UK distribution of products recalled in the Netherlands and Germany.

“We are awaiting full distribution details from the company and will publish advice shortly.”

Pieces of plastic

Millions of Mars, Milky Ways and Snicker bars were recalled by Mars Chocolate in Germany, after pieces of plastic were said to have been found in a product.

Also affected were: Milky Way Minis and Miniatures and certain kinds of boxes of Celebrations.

Products affected carried best before dates from June 19 2016 to January 8 2017.

Meanwhile, more than 50 countries could be affected by the recall. The Associated Press reported Roel Govers, spokesman for Mars in the Netherlands, as saying the recall affected 55 countries.

The manufacturer later confirmed the recall had widened to include UK products.
