Made from stevia and dietary fibres, the Unavoo sweetener contains no chemicals or alcoholic sugars.
It has a glycaemic index value of zero, meaning blood glucose levels do not increase after its consumption, making it safe for people with diabetes.
Unavoo’s inventor Yuval Maymon owned 50 worldwide ice cream stores when he was diagnosed with diabetes nine years ago, prompting him to investigate sugar substitutes.
‘Zero glycaemic value’
“It took me 700 trials, but I eventually created a sweetener with zero glycaemic value, no chemicals and no hidden sugars – and it actually tastes like sugar.” Maymon said.
The first industrial-scale production tests on a range of foods have been completed successfully, he added.
Maymon’s start-up firm, Unavoo Food Technologies, is working with agricultural commodities trader ED&F Man to manufacture and distribute the sweetener.
Meanwhile, Omega Ingredients said its new natural sweetener offered manufacturers the opportunity to make clean-label products.
The creation of biochemist Steve Pearce, MegaSweet is a calorie-free natural flavour sucrose sweetener claimed to have no after-taste.
It was created to combat the challenge faced by the beverage industry from the sugar tax, said Pearce.
