Teacake manufacturer Tunnock’s is to create up to 30 jobs at its factory, after announcing a multi-million pound plan to expand its main site in Scotland.

The 1,900m2 expansion of Tunnock’s Uddingston factory in Lanarkshire will cover two new floors and will help increase production at the site, claimed the company.

This proposal will future proof the present factory to accommodate increased worldwide demand for Tunnock’s products,” said a spokesman.

“The effect of the proposed extension is to allow new and improved equipment to be installed.”

The 30 new jobs will be for night shift work at the factory, while the company made assurances that the scheme would safeguard the 532 workers employed by Tunnock’s.

Complaints sent to planners

However, complaints sent to planners from local residents who opposed the planned extension have claimed it will cause traffic problems and ruin the views from their properties, according to media reports.

Tunnock’s declined to comment further on the planned extension.

The news followed a 10% surge in the company’s sales after an unsuccessful campaign to boycott Tunnock’s Teacakes resulted in mass media attention for the traditional British snack this year (April 2016).

Scottish nationalists took to twitter to tell users to stop buying Teacakes and protested outside the company’s factory, after an advertising campaign neglected to mention the treat’s Scottish heritage.

Iconic British Snacks

Established in 1890, Tunnock’s manufactures iconic British snacks such as Caramel Wafers, Snow Balls and Teacakes.

The factory holds organised tours for the general public, which are booked up to 12 months in advance. It is also linked to the nearby Tunnock’s tearoom.

Meanwhile, Ready Foods’s new £2M factory expansion has created 25 new jobs and safeguarded more than 70 existing roles in the company with the help of government support, according to the firm.

A £320,000 grant from the Welsh Economic Growth Fund helped support the extension of Ready Foods’s Caernarfon, South Wales factory.
