The 2017 Food Manufacture Excellence Awards, which recognise the very best companies and individuals in UK food and drink manufacturing, are now open for receipt of entries.

Now in their 17th year, the awards cover all food and drink manufacturing sector categories, ranging from: ambient, bakery and beverages to chilled foods, dairy and fresh produce; and from frozen foods, to meat, poultry and seafood. The awards are free to enter.

From the winners of the individual category awards, one company will be selected by our independent panel of expert judges to be crowned Food Manufacture Company of the Year. Last year, this accolade was awarded to Northern Ireland-based meal accompaniments manufacturer Mash Direct.

A series of other awards are also open to those companies that have entered the main category awards. These include: Best new use of food ingredients; Environmental initiative of the year; Supply chain initiative of the year; and Training programme of the year.

Specialist awards

However, to be eligible for consideration, applicants for these specialist awards must first have entered one of the main category awards.

For the second year running, we will also be making the ‘Me and My Factory – editor’s choice’ award, which will recognise the company from those featured under this regular and popular section within the pages of Food Manufacture over the previous year, that our editorial team considers stands out from all the rest.

Last year’s ‘Me and My Factory – editor’s choice’ award was made to Trevor Newman, operations director at Coca-Cola European Partners (Wakefield).

In its fourth year, a Young talent of the year award will be made to the individual aged 25 years or under, who the judges assess to be the most promising new apprentice or graduate in food and drink manufacture. Last year, this award went to Wojciech Kalinowski from Bradgate Bakery.

Judges’ star performer

An award will also be made for the Judges’ star performer, presented to a company selected from all entries, which the judges believe deserves recognition for one particular area of its activities.

A Small and medium-sized enterprise innovation of the year award will also be made to the best firm whose turnover is less than £10M and employs fewer than 100 staff.

The closing date for receipt of entries is Monday July 17. The winners will be revealed at a fun-packed awards evening at the Hilton Park Lane in London on November 1.
