Sustainable palm oil use among food and drink manufacturers will be encouraged by the Food and Drink Federation’s (FDF’s) new sustainable palm oil guide.

Palm oil is the world’s most widely used vegetable oil, it said. UK manufacturers must be informed on how to switch to and source sustainable palm oil, the FDF added.

The guide’s launch follows the new EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation, which came into force last December and stipulates that all food businesses must identify which products contain palm oil.

‘Global demand rising’

Former FDF president Melanie Leech said: “As global demand for palm oil is rising rapidly and consumers are increasingly seeking reassurance that the products they buy have been sustainably sourced, it makes good business sense to assess your use of this vital ingredient.”

Many leading manufacturers had announced commitments to source 100% sustainable palm oil in line with certification standards, she added.
