The future of 150 Brakes Group employees remains uncertain after the UK foodservice giant confirmed plans to close its Runcorn depot earlier this month.

Brakes has declared its intention to relocate its supply chain and operations teams from the Runcorn site to Warrington.

In addition, the company said it had entered consultations over the remaining workers at the site on April 22, with a view to offering them opportunities elsewhere in the group. Meetings will continue until the end of this month, FoodManufacture.co.uk understands.

A total of 150 staff would be affected by the relocation and closure, Brakes said.

‘Remaining functions moved’

“It is proposed that the site will close and that the remaining functions be moved to other existing sites within the Brakes business,” Brakes stated.

“We are very grateful for the excellent contribution that the Runcorn team has made to the Brakes business and we will continue to make every effort to support our colleagues affected by the proposal, during this unsettling time.”

Last month, press reports emerged suggesting that Brakes was in exclusive discussions to acquire Nestlé’s international frozen food business Davigel. It is not known what stage negotiations are at now and a spokesman for Brakes declined to comment.
