Corned beef pasties: A jewel in the Welsh culinary crown?
Independent baker Peter’s Bakery is spearheading a campaign to have the corned beef pasty recognised as a Welsh national dish.

The pasty maker will visit the Welsh Assembly today (August 25) at Cathays Park, Cardiff to present a 2,000 signature petition in support of the campaign for national recognition for the humble pasty.

William Graham, Conservative Assembly Member for South Wales East, has agreed to receive the petition: “Peter’s has already gained a huge amount of backing for their campaign, which shows how important a part of our national heritage the Welsh people feel the corned beef pasty is,” said Graham. “I’m delighted to be lending my support by accepting this petition from Peter’s, and I wish them all the best in their mission to secure the corned beef pasty’s new status as a national dish.”

Clare Morgan, the firm’s marketing controller, said: “It was always our intention that with enough support from the public, we would try to win backing for the campaign at the highest level. Being able to present the petition to the Welsh Assembly is a fantastic opportunity to add a major boost to the campaign, and we’re thrilled to have gained William Graham’s support.”

Peter’s plans to provide free corned beef pasties from its pie-mobile to passers-by outside the Assembly and others around Cardiff city centre when it hands in its petition.
