Good Week, Bad Week

Bread, Greencore and retailers make week’s top news

A potential growth fall for Aldi and Lidl and the impact supermarket price wars have had on bakers lead our selection of the week’s top news.

Bread was identified as one of the biggest casualties of the supermarket price war in an exclusive podcast interview with the Federation of Bakers’ director Gordon Polson for FoodManufacture.co.uk.

Destruction

Aldi and Lidl were facing a path to destruction as they were forced to stock more and more products, Shore Capital claimed.

In sharp contrast, grocery think-tank IGD estimated the discount retail market would grow by 82.2% between now and 2020 from £12.8bn to £23.2bn.

There was welcome good news for troubled retailer Morrisons, which recorded a sales growth of 0.2%, its first sales rise in 18 months.

Greencore had cause for celebration as it announced a multi-million pound expansion at its Worksop sandwich site, potentially creating 150 jobs in Nottinghamshire.

Advanced talks

Finally, Nomad Holdings and frozen food firm Findus confirmed they were in advanced, exclusive sales talks.

Bad Week

Findus’s Young’s Seafood would not be included in any completed deal, Findus said.

The potential deal follows Nomad’s acquisition of frozen food firm Iglo Group for £1.87bn in April.
