Test all beef products, says FSA after Findus product has 100% horsemeat
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has ordered all food businesses to test their beef products, after it was revealed that some Findus lasagne contained 100% horsemeat.
Catherine Brown, chief executive of the FSA, said the latest revelations were “appalling”.
The FSA said retailers and processors should test beef products and send the results to the food safety watchdog by February 15, in order to assess how widespread the horse meat contamination has become.
A Findus spokesman said: “We understand that it is a very sensitive subject for consumers and we would like to reassure you we have reacted immediately. We do not believe this to be a food safety issue. We are confident that we have fully resolved this supply chain issue.”
The firm added in a statement on its website that “internal investigation strongly suggests that the horsemeat found in Beef Lasagne was not accidental”. “For this reason we are taking legal advice about the grounds for pursing a case against suppliers.”
