Horse meat possibly on sale for a year: Food Standards Agency
Horsemeat could have been sold in supermarket burgers for up to a year, according to the UK’s food safety boss.
Catherine Brown, chief executive of the Food Standards Agency (FSA), made the statement at a meeting of the cross-party Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee at Westminster on January 30.
“It is possible that these burgers have been on sale for a year. When Polish authorities [which investigated claims the contamination occured in their country] get to the bottom of this we’ll know if it has been happening [for that long].”
Meanwhile, FSA chairman Jeff Rooker revealed divisions between the UK organisation and its Irish counterpart, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, which he claimed failed to adhere to protocol by not informing him as soon as they had an indication of a problem.
